Ontario Health & Physical Education (HPE) Curriculum
Submitted to PE Central by Jeff Stuart who is a 4th grade classroom teacher at Margaret Beeks ES
The current Ontario Ministry Curriculum for Health and Physical Education is based on the development of physical literacy and active healthy living for life.
There is a focus on Teaching games for understanding and the development of physical literacy rather than physical training or sport specific preparation.
A great resource for further information on physical literacy and it's importance as a foundation for life long physically active living can be found at:

The following excerpt from the Ontario Curriculum, Health and Physical Education guidelines highlights the emphasis on physical literacy and it's new focus in the revised edition.

Physical Education is Different Than Physical Activity
It is important to note that physical activity (PA) or exercise is different from physical education (PE). PE is most certainly a key piece to lifelong PA. The emphasis in the new curriculum is on teaching fundamental skills that can be applied to a wide variety of activities. Mastering these fundamental skills will provide a strong foundation and hopefully encourage students to embrace a life long enjoyment and involvement in physical activity.
